Local Interest

Within a short walk is Allensford Country Park with enchanting riverside walks, a discovery woodland, a waterfall and a play-park. It is also host to local events and hot-air balloon launches. A little further away is the impressive Victorian Hownsgill Viaduct. A couple of miles away is Consett, once a steel town but now hosting a modern range of shops and nightlife. There is a huge amount of countryside to wander around locally including wooded river valleys, picturesque reservoirs and moorlands.

Travelling a little further, County Durham and Northumberland offer a huge amount of places to visit and things to do. Too much for one page (or even one website). We have provided some useful links for you. A small list of examples include:

Europe's largest indoor shopping experience at the Metro Centre;

Europe's museum of the year at Beamish;

the historic city of Durham with Cathedral, Castle, cobbled streets, river and restaurants;

many Roman heritage sites including Hadrian's Wall;

recently redeveloped Newcastle City Centre, famous for it's nightclubs, art galleries, museums, restaurants, quayside etc.,

the outstanding natural beauty of the Durham Dales;

England's highest single waterfall, High Force;

the Durham Coast with beaches, rare plants and wildlife;

Castles;

Famous gardens;
